Marry in the UK, then leave: A Marriage Visitor visa is usually the relevant route if she intends to marry or give notice in the UK, leave within the permitted visit and live elsewhere afterward.
Marry in the UK, then live together there: A fiancé(e) family visa may be the appropriate route if you meet the requirements and intend to settle together in the UK.
Already married and moving to the UK: Consider the spouse or partner family visa route instead.
These are different applications with different purposes. A wedding booking alone does not determine eligibility; your plans and the full circumstances matter.
Why isn’t a Standard Visitor visa suitable?
The Standard Visitor route allows activities such as tourism and visits to a partner, family or friends. It does not ordinarily permit someone to marry, register a civil partnership or give notice of either while in the UK.
If marriage is already planned, describe that intention honestly and apply under the appropriate route. Attempting to use a tourist visit for a planned wedding can cause serious problems with the visa application and at the UK border. Marriage Visitor visa: marry and return abroad
A Marriage Visitor visa is designed for someone who wants to marry or give notice in the UK but does not intend to settle there afterward. The visa allows a visit of up to six months. The applicant must meet the visitor requirements and show that the marriage plans are genuine and that they will leave the UK at the end of the visit.
She cannot extend a Marriage Visitor visa or switch from it to a different visa while in the UK. If you later decide to live together in the UK, she would normally need to leave and apply for the appropriate family visa from outside the UK. Read more in our Marriage Visitor visa guide.
Fiancé(e) visa: marry and settle in the UK
If the plan is to marry in the UK and then live there together, a fiancé(e) visa under the family route may fit your plans. You would need to meet the relevant relationship, financial, English language and other requirements. The marriage must take place within six months of arrival.
After the marriage, she must apply to extend her stay as a partner. A fiancé(e) visa does not permit work during the engagement period; permission to work follows if the later partner application is approved. Our UK fiancé(e) visa guide explains this route in more detail.
What if she already has a UK visitor visa?
Having a valid Standard Visitor visa does not turn it into permission to marry or settle in the UK. If your plans have changed since the visa was granted, get advice before booking the ceremony or giving notice. The correct next step depends on her present immigration position and your intentions as a couple.
Similarly, marrying abroad does not by itself give a Thai spouse permission to live in the UK. If you marry in Thailand and intend to move to Britain, you will need to consider the difference between a visit and living together in the UK.
Choose the route before you book the wedding
Start with one question: Where will you live after you marry? Once that is clear, you can prepare the application and wedding plans around the right visa. If there has been a previous refusal or she is already in the UK as a visitor, the details are especially important.
