Want to sponsor your girlfriend’s UK visit?
Tell us about her circumstances in Thailand, your plans for the trip and any previous UK visa refusals.
Ask us on WhatsAppYes, you can support your Thai girlfriend’s application to visit the UK. You can offer accommodation, pay for her trip and provide evidence of your relationship. But a sponsor cannot guarantee a visa: the Home Office must also be satisfied that she is a genuine visitor who will leave the UK at the end of her stay.
What does “sponsoring” a visitor actually mean?
For a Standard Visitor visa, sponsorship usually means that you are helping with some or all of the costs of the visit. You might pay for flights, provide a place to stay or cover her day-to-day expenses. You can explain those arrangements in an invitation letter and provide evidence that you are able to support her.
Your girlfriend remains the visa applicant. She completes the application in her own name and needs to give accurate information about her circumstances, travel plans and relationship with you. There is no separate sponsor licence or formal sponsorship certificate for an ordinary visit to your partner.
What should the UK sponsor provide?
Useful sponsor evidence
- An invitation letter explaining your relationship, the purpose and length of the visit, where she will stay and which costs you will cover.
- Proof of your identity and status, such as a copy of your British passport or evidence of your UK immigration status.
- Evidence of accommodation showing where she will stay during the visit.
- Evidence of funds or income if you will pay for flights, accommodation or living expenses.
- Relationship evidence, such as visits together, travel records and a sensible selection of photographs or communications.
The documents should match what the application form says. If you live in Thailand, work overseas or plan to travel to the UK together, explain that clearly rather than using a standard invitation letter that assumes you live in Britain.
What must your girlfriend show?
Your financial support answers only part of the question. The application should also show that the proposed visit is genuine, that she will follow the visitor rules and that she intends to leave the UK afterwards.
Her evidence will depend on her real circumstances. Employment, a business, studies, family responsibilities, previous travel and other commitments in Thailand may all be relevant. None is a compulsory document that every applicant must have, and none guarantees approval by itself.
There is no fixed minimum bank balance for a UK visitor visa. The funds and support should be credible for the length and cost of the particular trip.
Can I sponsor her if she is unemployed?
Yes. Your girlfriend does not have to be employed simply because you are paying for her visit. However, where she has no job or independent income, the application needs a particularly clear explanation of her everyday circumstances in Thailand and why she plans to return after the trip.
A sponsor’s strong bank statements cannot, on their own, resolve doubts about the applicant’s intentions. Do not create a false job letter or temporarily transfer money into her account to make the application look stronger. Present the genuine situation and support it with appropriate evidence.
How do we prepare the application?
Agree the real purpose and length of the visit. Explain what you will do in the UK and how long she can reasonably be away from Thailand.
Decide who will pay for each cost. Cover flights, accommodation and living expenses in a way that matches your supporting documents.
Prepare both sides of the evidence. Include relevant documents from the sponsor and the applicant, without burying the important points in hundreds of pages.
Check the application for consistency. Dates, addresses, employment details, travel history and previous refusals should be accurate across the form and supporting evidence.
What if we want her to live in the UK?
A Standard Visitor visa is for a temporary visit. It is not the right route if your genuine intention is for your girlfriend to move to the UK and live there with you. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to consider a fiancée, spouse or unmarried partner family visa instead.
Likewise, if you intend to give notice of marriage or marry in the UK, choose the appropriate marriage or family visa route before she travels. A Standard Visitor visa does not permit those activities.
