Can My Thai Girlfriend Get a UK Visitor Visa if I Sponsor Her?

Yes, you can sponsor your Thai girlfriend’s UK visit. You may pay for her flights, provide accommodation and cover her expenses during the trip. She can still apply for a Standard Visitor visa if she has limited savings of her own.

Your sponsorship is only one part of the application. UK Visas and Immigration must also be satisfied that she is making a genuine, temporary visit and will leave the UK at the end of it.

What does “sponsoring” a visitor mean?

For a visitor application, sponsorship means that another person is helping with the costs or arrangements of the trip. You might provide a place to stay, pay for flights, cover daily expenses or contribute to some of these costs.

It does not give you the power to approve the visa or take responsibility for the decision. Your girlfriend remains the visa applicant, and UKVI assesses whether she meets the visitor requirements.

What documents should the UK sponsor provide?

Provide evidence relevant to the support you have promised. This may include:

• A short invitation letter explaining your relationship, her proposed visit, where she will stay and which costs you will cover.
• Evidence of your identity and UK status, such as your British passport or relevant immigration document.
• Financial evidence if you are paying for the trip, showing that you can afford the support alongside your own commitments.
• Accommodation details if she will stay with you.
• Relationship evidence where it helps explain how you know each other and the reason for the visit.

What must your girlfriend show?

Even if you pay for everything, she should explain her own circumstances in Thailand and what she intends to do after the trip. Depending on her situation, this might involve employment, freelance work, business activities, studies, family responsibilities or other ongoing commitments.

There is no rule that every applicant must own land, have a particular job or hold a fixed amount in a bank account. UKVI considers the circumstances as a whole. The proposed length and cost of the visit should make sense alongside the evidence.

What if she is unemployed or has little money?

She can still apply. Be honest about her situation and explain how she normally supports herself, who will fund the visit and why she plans to return to Thailand. A strong sponsor’s bank balance does not, by itself, answer every question about the applicant’s intentions.

Avoid transferring a large sum into her account simply to create an impressive balance without explaining its source. If you are paying, say so and show how the funding will work.

Does a recent relationship make a visa impossible?

No. There is no minimum relationship length for a boyfriend to support a visitor application. The application should accurately describe how you met, the time you have spent together and the purpose of this particular visit.

Can she stay with you for six months?

A Standard Visitor can usually stay for up to six months, but an application for a long stay should still be credible in light of her circumstances. A visitor visa cannot be used to live in the UK through frequent or successive visits.
