What visa does my Thai wife need to live in England?
A spouse visa under the UK family visa rules is a common route where the sponsoring partner is British, Irish or settled in the UK. Other qualifying sponsor statuses are also covered by the rules.
If you hold a temporary work or study visa, your wife may need to consider a dependant application instead, where your visa category permits dependants. It is therefore important to establish your own status before choosing her application route.
What are the main spouse visa requirements?
- You must both be aged 18 or over.
- Your marriage must be recognised in the UK.
- Your relationship must be genuine and continuing.
- You must intend to live together permanently in the UK.
- You must meet the applicable financial requirement.
- Your wife must meet the English language requirement unless exempt.
- You must provide evidence of suitable accommodation.
The marriage certificate is an important document, but it should form part of a complete application. Prepare a clear account of your relationship and explain any periods spent living apart.
How much income do I need?
For many new spouse or partner applications, the minimum income requirement is £29,000 a year. The evidence needed depends on the income source and the application circumstances.
Do not assume that every source of household income can be counted. Employment, self-employment, pensions and other income must be considered under the relevant financial rules. Qualifying cash savings may also help meet the requirement.
Does the old £18,600 requirement still apply?
Transitional rules can apply where the first partner application was made before 11 April 2024 and the applicant is continuing with the same partner. Under those rules, a £18,600 base requirement and relevant child additions may apply.
Where the sponsor receives certain qualifying disability or carer's benefits, adequate maintenance and accommodation are assessed instead of the usual minimum income threshold.

What documents should we prepare?
Your checklist should reflect your circumstances. Common documents to review include:
- Your wife's passport and evidence of your nationality or UK immigration status.
- Your marriage certificate and any documents showing previous marriages have legally ended.
- Relationship evidence, including time spent together and shared responsibilities.
- Financial documents appropriate to the income or savings being relied upon.
- Evidence of your proposed UK accommodation.
- Evidence meeting the English language requirement.
- A tuberculosis certificate where required.
- Translations of relevant Thai-language documents.
Check that names, dates and financial figures are consistent throughout the application. If a document contains an error or your circumstances need explanation, address it clearly before submission.
Does my Thai wife need an English test?
Many applicants demonstrate their English through a test from an approved provider. An eligible degree may also be used, subject to the required supporting evidence.
Exemptions can apply in specified circumstances, including age or a physical or mental condition that prevents the applicant from meeting the requirement. Speaking English confidently does not, by itself, replace the formal evidence required.

Can she move to England on a visitor visa?
A visitor visa is for a temporary visit. It does not provide permission to settle in the UK, and visitors generally need to leave the UK to apply for a family visa.
If your intention is to live together permanently, plan the appropriate application from the outset. Explain your actual plans accurately rather than treating a visitor visa as the first stage of a permanent move.
How long can my Thai wife stay?
An overseas spouse visa is normally granted for up to 2 years and 9 months. An extension normally provides a further 2 years and 6 months.
On the standard five-year partner route, she may become eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain after five qualifying years, provided the settlement requirements are met. Settlement requires a separate application and is not automatic.
