Do Thai People Need a Visa for the UK? | 2026 Guide

Yes. Thai passport holders normally need a visa before travelling to the UK. This includes a holiday or a visit to a partner, friend or family member. The visa to apply for depends on what the person intends to do in the UK.

A UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is not a replacement for a visitor visa for someone travelling on a Thai passport. If the traveller also holds another nationality or already has UK immigration permission, their position may be different.

Which UK visa does a Thai citizen need?

  • Holiday or temporary family visit: Usually a Standard Visitor visa.
  • Marriage in the UK followed by departure: Check the Marriage Visitor visa requirements.
  • Marriage followed by living in the UK: Check the fiancée visa or relevant family route.
  • Joining a spouse or partner to live in the UK: A family visa may be appropriate.
  • Work or longer study: A visa for that specific purpose is normally required.

Choose the route according to the actual plan. A visitor visa is for a temporary stay; it does not give permission to take a job or move to the UK permanently.

Visiting a British partner or family member

A Thai citizen can apply for a Standard Visitor visa to see a partner, relatives or friends. The application should explain the purpose and length of the visit, where the applicant will stay, how the trip will be funded and why they intend to leave the UK afterwards.

A UK host can provide an invitation, accommodation and financial support. The applicant’s own circumstances in Thailand still matter. Employment, business activity, family responsibilities and other commitments may be relevant, depending on the individual case.

How does a Thai citizen apply?

The application is normally completed online before travel. The applicant provides the required information and supporting documents and follows the instructions for proving their identity, which may include an appointment at a visa application centre.

Check that the form and documents are accurate and consistent. If the applicant has previously been refused, disclose the refusal and address the reasons given. Read our guide on what to do if a Thai girlfriend has been refused a UK visa.

Does a Thai person need a visa to transit through the UK?

Transit rules depend on whether the traveller will pass through UK border control, their onward journey and the documents they hold. Some travellers may qualify for a transit exemption. Check the journey using the official GOV.UK visa checker before booking.
