Does VFS keep your passport for a UK visa application in Thailand?
In many UK visa applications from Thailand, applicants now attend VFS Global to give biometrics and complete the appointment, then leave with their passport. However, this is not a rule that applies to every applicant in every visa route. You must follow the instructions issued after your own online application, because UKVI or VFS may still require the passport to be retained or later submitted.
The position has become more confusing because the UK has moved towards digital immigration status, including eVisas. An eVisa is an online record of immigration status, but some applications may still involve a passport vignette, entry clearance sticker, or a later passport request depending on the route and UKVI instructions. GOV.UK explains that eVisas have replaced many physical immigration documents, while existing visa vignettes remain valid until they expire: GOV.UK eVisa guidance.
What happens at the VFS biometric appointment?
For most applicants, the UK visa process starts on GOV.UK. After the form is submitted and the fee is paid, the applicant is directed to book a VFS Global appointment. VFS manages the visa application centre, appointment logistics, biometric enrolment and document handling. UK Visas and Immigration, usually called UKVI, makes the visa decision.
At the appointment, VFS staff normally check the appointment details, confirm identity, take fingerprints and a digital photograph, and deal with document upload or scanning where required. Optional services, such as courier return or premium appointment services, may be available depending on the location and visa route.
If Thai Visa Express is assisting you, we prepare the online application, organise the supporting evidence, upload documents where appropriate, check consistency, and guide the applicant through what to expect at VFS Bangkok or the Pattaya premium service.
When can an applicant leave with their passport?
Where the appointment instructions allow it, the applicant may leave VFS with their passport after biometrics have been enrolled. This is useful if the passport is needed for Thai immigration matters, identification, work, banking, or travel to another country while the UK visa application is pending.
You should not assume this will always happen. Read the VFS appointment confirmation, UKVI emails and any instructions shown in the online account. If VFS is instructed to retain the passport, or if passport submission is required for that route, follow those instructions.
When might VFS or UKVI retain or request the passport?
UKVI may need the physical passport to place a vignette in it, complete identity checks, correct a document issue, or finalise a decision where the route still requires a physical endorsement. VFS may also be instructed to collect the passport before returning documents by courier or collection.
If UKVI later asks for the passport, act quickly. Follow the request exactly, check the deadline, and submit the passport through the stated VFS process. Do not send the passport by an informal method or to an address that is not listed in the official instructions.
Can you travel while the UK visa application is pending?
If you have your passport, you may be physically able to travel to another country while waiting for the UK visa decision. That does not mean travel is always sensible. You must be available to respond to UKVI requests and may need to return to Thailand to submit the passport.
You should not travel to the UK until the visa has been granted and you have checked the conditions of approval. Applicants should also avoid making non-refundable travel plans before receiving a decision, especially for UK visitor visa, UK spouse or settlement visa and partner visa applications.
eVisa or passport vignette?
Many successful applicants now receive digital immigration status through a UKVI account. The applicant should check that the account is accessible, the name matches the passport, the passport number is correct, and the visa conditions are understood. If travel is linked to a passport, the correct passport details must be attached to the UKVI account.
Some routes may still involve a vignette or require the passport for an entry clearance endorsement. This is why it is risky to say that every successful UK visa is now issued only as an eVisa. Check the decision email, UKVI account and any passport request carefully before making travel arrangements.
VFS Global is not UKVI
VFS Global does not decide UK visa applications. It provides appointment, biometric and document-handling services for UKVI. VFS staff cannot guarantee a result, change the rules, or approve a visa. UKVI assesses the evidence and decides whether the visa should be granted or refused.

Using VFS Bangkok or the Pattaya premium service
Applicants in Thailand commonly attend VFS Bangkok, while some choose a premium service closer to Pattaya when available. The application must be completed online first, the documents must be prepared properly, and the applicant must attend the biometric appointment unless UKVI gives different instructions.
Thai Visa Express can help by checking the correct visa route, preparing the application, organising evidence, uploading documents, booking the appointment and briefing the applicant. FAQ
Can I keep my passport while my UK visa is being processed?
Often, yes, but not always. Many applicants leave VFS with their passport after biometrics. Follow the instructions for your own application.
Can I travel to another country while waiting?
If you have your passport, you may be able to travel, but you must be ready to respond if UKVI asks for the passport or further information. Do not travel to the UK until the visa has been granted.
Will I receive a visa sticker or an eVisa?
It depends on the visa route and UKVI instructions. Many grants are digital through a UKVI account, but some cases may still involve a passport vignette.
What happens if UKVI requests my passport?
Follow the request exactly, check the deadline, and submit the passport through the stated VFS process. Keep copies of the instruction and submission receipt.
Does VFS decide the visa application?
No. VFS manages the appointment, biometrics and document handling. UKVI decides whether the visa is granted or refused.
