A Thai citizen can study in the UK, but the right visa depends on the course and how long it lasts. A short course, an English language programme and a university degree can fall under different immigration routes. Start by choosing the course and confirming that the education provider can accept international students.
Which UK visa does a Thai student need?
- Course lasting up to six months: Study may be permitted under a Standard Visitor visa, provided the course and provider meet the visitor rules.
- English language course lasting more than six months and up to 11 months: A Short-term study visa may be appropriate.
- Longer eligible course: A Student visa is usually required. The education provider must be a licensed student sponsor and issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
- Independent school: A child may need a Child Student visa, depending on their age and the school.
These routes have different conditions. For example, permission to study as a visitor does not turn a visitor visa into a route for living in the UK or taking a job. Check the conditions of the specific visa before applying.
Applying for a UK Student visa from Thailand
For a Student visa, the applicant first needs an offer from an eligible course provider. Once the provider has confirmed the place and issued a CAS, the student can prepare the visa application.
The application may require evidence of course fees and living costs, English language ability, a valid passport and other documents relevant to the student’s circumstances. Depending on the course and length of stay, a tuberculosis (TB) test or an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate may also be required.
Financial rules are detailed and can change. Check the amount required, whose money can be used and how long the funds must be held before submitting the application. An offer of a place does not, by itself, mean the visa requirements have been met.
What if she only wants to study English?
The length of the English language course matters. A course lasting up to six months may be possible under the visitor route. For an English-only course lasting more than six months but no longer than 11 months, the Short-term study visa may be the appropriate route. A longer course may require a Student visa with an eligible sponsor.
Check the school’s accreditation, course dates, tuition fees and accommodation plans before paying for a course or applying for a visa.
Can her family or partner pay for the course?
Someone else may be able to help with tuition or living costs, but the evidence must meet the rules for the particular visa route. The Student visa has specific requirements about acceptable funds and who can provide them. Do not assume that an invitation letter or a partner’s bank statement will be sufficient.
