Planning a UK visit with your Thai girlfriend?
Message Thai Visa Express to discuss her application and supporting documents.
If you want your Thai girlfriend to visit you in the UK for a holiday, she will normally need to apply for a UK Standard Visitor Visa before travelling.
People often call this a UK tourist visa, although the official visa category is the Standard Visitor Visa.
The application needs to demonstrate that the proposed visit is genuine, that sufficient funds are available and that your girlfriend intends to leave the UK when her visit is finished.
The Standard Visitor Visa currently costs £135 and normally allows a stay in the UK of up to 6 months.
What Visa Does My Thai Girlfriend Need?
For a temporary holiday or visit to a boyfriend, partner, family or friends, a Thai national will normally apply for a UK Standard Visitor Visa.
This route can be used for tourism and genuine temporary visits.
It is not intended for someone who plans to move permanently to the UK or use frequent visits to effectively live in Britain.
How Do I Apply for a UK Tourist Visa for My Thai Girlfriend?
The application process normally involves several stages.
- Check that the Standard Visitor route is appropriate.
- Complete the online UK visa application.
- Pay the government application fee.
- Book the biometric appointment.
- Prepare and upload the supporting documents.
- Attend the biometric appointment.
- Wait for the UKVI decision.
The application should be prepared carefully before submission because the information on the form needs to match the supporting documents.
How Early Can We Apply?
The earliest a Standard Visitor Visa application can normally be made is 3 months before the intended date of travel.
There is usually no advantage in leaving the application until immediately before the proposed trip.
Planning ahead gives you more time to organise financial evidence, relationship evidence and documents from Thailand.
How Much Does the UK Visitor Visa Cost?
As of September 2026, the UK government application fee for a Standard Visitor Visa of up to six months is £135.
Optional services may cost extra where available.
Visa fees can change, so the current Home Office charge should always be checked before the application is paid.
Can I Apply for the Visa for My Girlfriend?
You can help prepare the application and supporting evidence, but the application is made in your girlfriend's name.
The information provided must accurately reflect her personal circumstances.
You should never invent employment, income, savings or reasons to return to Thailand simply because you think they will make the application stronger.
Can I Sponsor My Thai Girlfriend?
Yes.
A British boyfriend or partner can provide financial sponsorship for a visitor visa application.
You may pay for:
- her flights;
- accommodation;
- food and living expenses;
- local transport;
- holiday activities; and
- other reasonable costs.
The important point is that the sponsorship should be genuine and properly explained.

Does She Need Her Own Money?
No fixed minimum personal bank balance is specified for a Standard Visitor Visa.
If you are paying for the trip, the application can say so.
UKVI will look at whether there is enough money available for the proposed visit and whether the financial evidence makes sense.
What Financial Documents Should We Provide?
The evidence depends on who is paying for the visit.
If your girlfriend is funding herself, relevant evidence might include:
- personal bank statements;
- employment evidence;
- salary evidence;
- business documents; and
- evidence explaining the source of significant funds.
If you are the sponsor, useful evidence may include:
- your bank statements;
- employment evidence;
- payslips;
- self-employment documents where relevant; and
- a clear sponsor letter explaining what you will pay for.
Does My Thai Girlfriend Need to Be Employed?
No.
Employment is not a legal requirement for a UK Visitor Visa.
An unemployed applicant can still qualify.
However, the application should explain her circumstances clearly and show why she will return to Thailand after the trip.
Possible ties can include:
- children;
- family responsibilities;
- property or accommodation;
- a business;
- education;
- financial commitments;
- caring responsibilities; and
- previous compliant travel.
What Documents Will My Thai Girlfriend Need?
The exact evidence varies from
Employment can certainly help explain an applicant's ties to Thailand, but it is only one part of the overall picture.
What Are Strong Ties to Thailand?
UKVI will usually look at the applicant's overall personal and economic circumstances when deciding whether she is likely to leave the UK at the end of the visit.
There is no single document that proves “strong ties”. Relevant evidence can include:
- employment;
- a business;
- children;
- parents or other dependants;
- property or accommodation;
- education;
- financial responsibilities;
- ongoing family commitments; and
- previous travel followed by a return to Thailand.
The application should explain why your girlfriend's life remains centred in Thailand and why she has a genuine reason to return after the holiday.
What Documents Does My Thai Girlfriend Need?
The exact supporting documents depend on her circumstances, but they may include:
- a valid Thai passport;
- bank statements;
- employment documents;
- business documents where self-employed;
- evidence of property or accommodation;
- documents relating to children or dependants;
- previous travel evidence;
- relationship evidence;
- details of the proposed trip; and
- translations of relevant Thai-language documents.
The application should contain evidence that supports the information given on the visa form rather than simply uploading a large number of unrelated documents.
What Documents Does the UK Sponsor Need?
If you are sponsoring your girlfriend, you will normally need to provide evidence showing who you are, your relationship with the applicant and your ability to provide the promised support.
This might include:
- a copy of your passport;
- a sponsor or invitation letter;
- bank statements;
- payslips;
- employment evidence;
- self-employment evidence where relevant;
- proof of your UK address; and
- evidence of the accommodation available during the visit.
The sponsor's documents should match what has been stated on the application form.
Do We Need a Sponsor Letter?
A sponsor letter can be very useful because it allows you to explain the purpose of the visit clearly.
A good sponsor letter may cover:
- who you are;
- your relationship with the applicant;
- how and when you met;
- why she wants to visit the UK;
- the proposed length of the trip;
- where she will stay;
- what costs you will pay; and
- the intention for her to return to Thailand after the visit.
There is no magic wording that guarantees approval. The letter should simply be accurate, clear and consistent with the rest of the application.
How Do We Prove the Relationship?
If your girlfriend is travelling specifically to spend time with you, it is sensible to provide evidence showing that the relationship is genuine.
This can include:
- photographs together;
- passport stamps;
- flight bookings;
- hotel bookings;
- holidays taken together;
- messages or call records;
- money transfers where relevant; and
- a short explanation of how the relationship developed.
You do not usually need to provide every WhatsApp message you have ever exchanged.
A sensible selection of evidence covering the history of the relationship is normally more useful than hundreds of pages of screenshots.
What if We Met Online?
Meeting online does not prevent someone from applying for a UK Visitor Visa.
The same applies if you met through social media, a dating website or dating app.
The application should simply explain how the relationship started and when you first met in person.
What if We Met in Pattaya?
There is no rule preventing a UK Visitor Visa because a couple met in Pattaya, Bangkok or another tourist destination in Thailand.
UKVI is interested in whether the relationship and proposed visit are genuine, not the name of the place where the couple first met.
Being straightforward is normally better than trying to hide or change the story.
Does an Age Difference Matter?
There is no visitor visa rule setting a maximum acceptable age difference between partners.
UKVI will look at the evidence as a whole.
Where there is a significant age difference, clear relationship evidence can help explain the history of the relationship and the genuine purpose of the visit.
Does My Thai Girlfriend Need to Own Property?
No.
Owning land, a house or condominium is not a requirement for a UK Visitor Visa.
Property can form part of the applicant's overall circumstances, but applicants who rent or live with relatives can still obtain visitor visas.
Does Previous Travel Help?
Previous international travel can be useful evidence.
If your girlfriend has previously travelled overseas and returned to Thailand in accordance with the immigration conditions of those countries, this may help demonstrate a history of genuine travel.
However, previous travel is not mandatory.
A first-time traveller can still qualify if the application otherwise demonstrates that she is a genuine visitor.
What if She Has Never Travelled Abroad?
That does not automatically create a problem.
Every traveller has a first international trip.
If she has no previous travel history, the application should focus on her real circumstances in Thailand, the purpose of the UK visit, the relationship and the arrangements for funding the trip.
Can My Thai Girlfriend Stay at My House?
Yes.
Your girlfriend can stay with you during her visit to the UK.
If you are providing accommodation, the application should explain where she will stay and show that the accommodation is genuinely available.
Depending on your circumstances, this might be supported by:
- a tenancy agreement;
- a mortgage statement;
- Land Registry evidence;
- a council tax document; or
- a letter from the property owner.
Can My Thai Girlfriend Work in the UK?
No.
A Standard Visitor is not permitted to take normal employment in the UK.
The visitor route is designed for temporary visits, holidays, visiting family or partners and other permitted visitor activities.
If the real intention is to move permanently to Britain and work here, the appropriate family immigration route should be considered instead.
Can We Get Married in the UK on a Tourist Visa?
If the purpose of the trip is to marry or give notice to marry in the UK, a normal Standard Visitor Visa is not the correct visa.
If the couple intends to marry in Britain and then leave the UK, the appropriate route may be a UK Marriage Visitor Visa.
If the intention is to marry and then settle permanently in the UK, you should consider the relevant family visa route instead.
What if We Plan to Marry in the Future?
Having a genuine future intention to marry does not automatically prevent a visitor visa application.
The important issue is the purpose of the current trip.
If your girlfriend is genuinely visiting temporarily and intends to return to Thailand afterwards, the application should explain that clearly.
How Long Can My Thai Girlfriend Stay?
A Standard Visitor Visa normally allows a stay of up to 6 months.
However, the proposed length of the trip should be realistic.
If she is employed, runs a business or has significant responsibilities in Thailand, a proposed six-month holiday may naturally require more explanation than a two or three-week visit.
The length of stay should fit the applicant's actual circumstances.
How Long Does the Visa Take?
UKVI processing times can change depending on demand and individual circumstances.
Applicants should check the current Home Office processing-time information before finalising travel plans.
Priority services may sometimes be available for an additional fee, although availability can vary.
Should We Buy Flights Before the Visa Is Granted?
It is generally sensible not to commit to expensive non-refundable flights before the visa decision has been made.
The application can explain the intended travel dates without creating unnecessary financial risk.
What Happens at the Biometrics Appointment?
After the online application has been submitted and paid for, your girlfriend will normally attend a visa application centre to provide biometric information.
This normally involves:
- fingerprints;
- a digital photograph; and
- completion of the appointment process associated with the application.
The supporting documents also need to be uploaded correctly for UKVI to consider them.
Common Reasons UK Tourist Visas Are Refused
A refusal can occur for many different reasons.
Common problems include:
- weak evidence of the applicant's circumstances in Thailand;
- unexplained bank deposits;
- financial information that does not match the documents;
- contradictions between the applicant and sponsor;
- an unrealistic proposed visit;
- poorly explained sponsorship;
- weak or inconsistent relationship evidence;
- previous immigration history that has not been addressed; and
- UKVI not being satisfied that the applicant will leave the UK.
What if My Thai Girlfriend Has Already Been Refused?
A previous visitor visa refusal does not automatically prevent a future application.
However, it is important to understand why the application was refused before applying again.
Simply submitting the same documents with a new form may result in the same problems being identified again.

Can an Unemployed Thai Girlfriend Get a UK Tourist Visa?
Yes.
Being unemployed is not an automatic reason for refusal.
The application should honestly explain the applicant's circumstances and show:
- how the visit will be funded;
- why she wants to travel;
- her relationship with the sponsor; and
- why she will return to Thailand afterwards.
Trying to create false employment or artificial income is far more damaging than simply presenting an honest unemployed applicant properly.
How Do We Improve the Chances of a Successful Application?
The strongest visitor applications are usually those that are clear, consistent and supported by relevant evidence.
Before applying, make sure that:
- the purpose of the trip is clear;
- the proposed length of stay is realistic;
- the financial arrangements are transparent;
- bank transactions can be explained;
- the relationship evidence is consistent;
- the applicant's circumstances in Thailand are documented;
- previous refusals are addressed; and
- all information on the application form matches the supporting documents.
Visitor Visa or Spouse Visa?
A UK Visitor Visa is for a temporary trip.
If you and your Thai girlfriend intend to marry and live together permanently in Britain, you may eventually need to consider a family visa instead.
See our UK Spouse Visa guide for information about the settlement route for married partners.
