Thai Visa in Vientiane: Current e-Visa Process

Can you apply for a Thai visa in Vientiane?

Eligible people who are physically in the Lao provinces covered by the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane can apply for an appropriate Thai visa through the official Thailand e-Visa system. The Embassy introduced this process for its jurisdiction in January 2025.

Check the Embassy’s current application instructions before travelling to Laos. Being in Vientiane does not itself make an applicant eligible for every visa category.

How does the application work?

1. Check that the Embassy in Vientiane can handle your application and that you meet the requirements for your chosen visa.
2. Submit your application and supporting documents through the official e-Visa website.
3. Follow the Embassy’s current instructions for paying the visa fee.
4. Wait for a decision and, if approved, keep the e-Visa confirmation sent to your registered email.

The Embassy says applicants no longer submit their passports and supporting documents in person at its Consular Section. It currently states that fee payment for this location is made in cash in Thai baht at the Consular Section, either by the applicant or another person.

How long does it take?

The Embassy gives an approximate processing time of 5–10 working days after the visa fee is paid where the required documents are complete. Extra checks or missing evidence can take longer. Do not plan on receiving a visa the morning after travelling to Laos.

What should you check before leaving Thailand?

• Your current permitted-until date and whether you need a Thai re-entry permit to preserve an existing extension.
• Your eligibility to enter Laos and any Lao entry requirements.
• Whether your intended Thai visa category can be applied for through Vientiane.
• Your accommodation and funds for a stay that may last longer than expected.

Leaving Thailand and applying for a visa does not guarantee approval or subsequent admission. If your main aim is simply to remain longer, first check whether an appropriate application can be made inside Thailand.
