How Many UK Visitor Visas Can My Thai Girlfriend Have?

There is no fixed limit on the number of UK visitor visas your Thai girlfriend can have. She may apply again when a visa expires, or consider a longer-validity visitor visa if she genuinely needs to make regular trips.

The important limit concerns how she uses the visitor route. Each visit must remain temporary. A UK visitor visa cannot be used to make the UK her main home through frequent or successive stays.

Is there a 180-day rule in every 12 months?

No. This is a common misunderstanding. Home Office guidance says there is no specified maximum amount of time a person can spend in the UK in a period such as 12 months, provided each visit stays within the permission granted for that visit.

That does not mean someone can spend most of the year in the UK by making repeated trips. UKVI considers the overall pattern and may refuse an application if it appears that the person is living in the UK as a visitor.

Remember: “Up to six months per visit” is not a guarantee that repeated six-month stays will be accepted.

What does UKVI look at with repeat visits?

The Home Office may consider how often she visits, the length of each stay and the time spent back in Thailand between trips. It can also look at:

  • The purpose of each visit and whether it is credible.
  • Her work, family, home and other connections to Thailand.
  • How she supports herself during long or frequent trips.
  • Whether her travel history matches what she said in previous applications.
  • Whether the UK has effectively become her main home.

There is no automatic “reset” simply because she leaves the UK briefly and returns. The whole travel pattern matters.

Can she apply for a two, five or ten-year visitor visa?

A long-term Standard Visitor visa may be available if she expects to visit regularly. These visas can be valid for two, five or ten years, but they do not give permission to remain in the UK continuously for that length of time. Each visit is normally limited to a maximum of six months, and the genuine visitor requirement continues to apply.

A long-term visa can also be questioned or cancelled if the pattern of travel indicates that the holder is using it to live in the UK. Read our UK visitor visa guide for the wider requirements.

What should a new application explain?

If your girlfriend has made several UK trips, include an accurate travel history and explain the purpose and proposed length of the next one. Relevant evidence may include her ongoing circumstances in Thailand, the funding arrangements and why the visit fits around her commitments.

If a previous visit lasted close to six months, be ready to explain why it was so long and why another visit is now proposed. Avoid describing a plan to spend most of the year together in the UK as a series of unrelated holidays.

What if we want to live together in the UK?

If your real plan is to make a home together in the UK, a visitor visa is the wrong route. Depending on your relationship and circumstances, a family visa as a spouse, fiancé(e) or eligible partner may be more appropriate.

Start with our UK fiancé(e) visa guide if you plan to marry in the UK, or read about moving back to the UK with a Thai wife if you are already married.

What if a repeat visitor application was refused?

Read the decision carefully before applying again. A refusal may concern the length and frequency of earlier stays, finances, circumstances in Thailand or doubts about the purpose of the new trip. The next application should address the actual concern with evidence, rather than simply repeating the previous submission.
