Lost your British passport in Thailand? The next step depends on whether you need to travel soon or can wait for a replacement passport. Here is what to do, how to report the loss, and where Thai Visa Express can help.
Travelling soon? Tell us your travel date and destination when you contact us. An emergency travel document may be appropriate if you cannot obtain a replacement passport before your journey. Do not assume it will be accepted for every route or transit country.
What to do if your passport is missing
- Check where you last used it. Contact your hotel, airline, transport provider or any venue where you may have left it.
- Report a theft to the Thai police. Ask for a copy of the police report and keep any reference number. A report may also help with an insurance claim.
- Report the missing passport to HM Passport Office. A lost or stolen British passport should be cancelled promptly to reduce the risk of misuse. If you apply for an emergency travel document, cancellation is handled as part of that application.
- Choose the right travel document. Your departure date will help determine whether to apply for a replacement passport or check eligibility for an emergency travel document.
Important: Once a passport has been cancelled, do not try to travel with it if it turns up later.
Replacement passport or emergency travel document?
Replacement British passport
If you have time before your next journey, you can apply for a replacement British passport from Thailand. The application and supporting documents are submitted through the overseas passport process. HM Passport Office decides whether further evidence is needed.
Emergency travel document
If you need to travel before a replacement passport can be issued, check whether you qualify for a UK emergency travel document. It is generally issued for a specified journey rather than as a regular passport. Check your destination and any transit requirements before making travel arrangements.
Use the official GOV.UK lost passport reporting service and emergency travel document guidance for the current rules. The GOV.UK Thailand passport page also links to the overseas replacement process.
What information should you prepare?
The exact requirements depend on the application, but it helps to gather:
- Your name, date of birth and contact details in Thailand.
- A photograph or copy of the missing passport, if you have one.
- Details of when and where the passport went missing.
- A Thai police report if it was stolen, or if one is otherwise requested.
- Any other identity documents and your Thai visa or permission-to-stay details.
- Your intended travel dates and route if you need to leave urgently.
What about your Thai visa or entry stamp?
If your lost passport contained your Thai entry stamp, extension or visa, you may need to deal with Thai Immigration before travelling on a new document. Keep any copies of your passport and immigration stamps. The steps depend on your immigration status and the document you receive, so check your position before booking travel.
