Thai Girlfriend Has a UK Visa: Can We Visit Europe?

Visiting Europe After a UK Trip

Your Thai girlfriend has a UK visitor visa and you would like to take a trip to France, Spain or another European destination while she is in the UK. Can she use her UK visa? Usually not. A UK visa gives permission to travel to the UK; it does not automatically give a Thai passport holder permission to enter the Schengen area.

For a short trip to a Schengen country, she will generally need a separate Schengen visa. The rules depend on her nationality, destination and personal circumstances, so check the country you intend to visit before booking.

Does a UK visitor visa cover Europe?

No. The UK and Schengen visa systems are separate. A valid UK Standard Visitor visa does not serve as a Schengen visa for a Thai national. Equally, a Schengen visa does not replace the permission she needs to enter or return to the UK.

“Europe” is not one visa area. Many popular destinations are in the Schengen area, but Ireland has its own visa rules, and other countries may have different entry arrangements. Check the rules for each destination on your itinerary.

Can we visit several Schengen countries?

A valid Schengen short-stay visa can generally be used for travel within the Schengen area, subject to its dates, number of permitted entries and length of stay. The usual short-stay limit is 90 days in any 180-day period; the individual visa may allow less time.

Apply through the country that is the main destination of the trip. If there is no main destination because the stays are equal, check the rules for the country of first entry. Do not choose a consulate solely because its appointments appear easier.

Should she apply in Thailand or the UK?

Plan the Schengen application before leaving Thailand if she normally lives there. Applications are generally made in the country where the applicant is legally resident. Being temporarily in the UK as a visitor does not necessarily make her eligible to apply through a Schengen consulate in the UK.

There can be exceptions under the applicable visa rules, but do not assume she can obtain a Schengen visa after arriving in Britain. Check the relevant consulate’s requirements well before your trip.

What documents might she need?

Requirements depend on the destination and application location. They commonly include a valid passport, application form, itinerary, accommodation arrangements, evidence of funds or sponsorship, travel medical insurance and evidence that she intends to leave the Schengen area before her permission expires.

If you are paying for the trip, explain the arrangement and provide suitable evidence. Follow the checklist issued by the country handling the application.

Can she return to the UK after the European trip?

Check her UK visa or digital immigration status before leaving. If she holds a valid multiple-entry UK visitor visa, a short trip outside the UK does not necessarily prevent another visit. However, permission to enter is considered at the border, and repeated or lengthy UK visits can raise questions about whether she is using a visitor visa to live in the UK.

Make sure her UK permission remains valid for the planned return and that she can explain the purpose and length of the remaining UK visit.

Plan both applications together

Before paying for non-refundable travel, check the UK visa dates, the proposed Schengen itinerary, application location and appointment availability. Keep the dates and explanations consistent across the two applications.
