Thai Retirement Visa: Travel and Re-Entry Permits

Living in Thailand on a retirement-based extension and planning a trip abroad? Before you leave, check whether you need a re-entry permit. This small step can protect your existing permission to stay when you return.

What does a re-entry permit do?

A re-entry permit allows you to depart and return while retaining the remaining period of an existing permission to stay. It does not extend your stay or give you a fresh year on return. Your original permission-to-stay expiry date still matters.

Single or multiple re-entry permit?

These are government permit fees. If you use an agent to prepare or handle an application, their service fee is separate.

How do you apply?

Thai Immigration uses form TM.8 for a re-entry permit. Check the current requirements with the immigration office where you intend to apply, including the photograph, passport copies and fee. Give yourself enough time before departure and inspect the permit details once it has been issued.

• Look at your current permission-to-stay stamp and expiry date.
• Check whether you already have a valid re-entry permit or a visa that allows the planned entry.
• Choose a single or multiple permit according to your travel plans.
• Check your passport and permit details before you travel.

What about renewing the retirement extension?

A re-entry permit and an annual extension are separate applications. If your extension will expire while you are away, plan your travel and renewal dates carefully.
