Australian Visitor Visa for Thai Nationals: Step-by-Step Guide

Thai nationals planning a holiday or a visit to family, friends or a partner in Australia commonly apply for the Visitor visa, subclass 600, Tourist stream. This guide focuses on applicants who are outside Australia and preparing their application from Thailand.

A well-prepared application explains the proposed visit and supports it with documents that reflect the applicant’s actual circumstances. Before starting, decide why you are travelling, how long you hope to stay, where you will stay and who will pay.

Planning a visit to Australia?

Tell Thai Visa Express who is travelling, the purpose of the trip and whether there has been a previous refusal. We can discuss application preparation and provide a quotation.

Step 1: Choose the correct visitor visa stream

The Tourist stream covers tourism and visits to family or friends. The Sponsored Family stream has separate formal sponsorship requirements. An invitation or financial support from a partner does not automatically make an application a Sponsored Family case.

If the purpose is business visitor activities, check the Business Visitor stream. Plans to work or move permanently require consideration of a different visa pathway.

Compare the official subclass 600 streams before selecting your application.

Step 2: Prepare a realistic travel plan

Describe the trip plainly. Include proposed dates, destinations, accommodation and the reason for travelling. If you will stay with someone, identify that person and explain the arrangement.

Make sure the visit length fits the rest of the application. For example, if an employer has approved two weeks of leave, explain a proposed trip lasting longer rather than leaving the difference unanswered.

An itinerary can help organise your plans without requiring you to purchase flights before the decision. Keep bookings flexible while the application is pending.

Step 3: Explain your circumstances in Thailand

Your evidence should help the decision-maker understand your everyday life and your plans after the visit. Prepare an accurate account rather than trying to fit circumstances into a standard template.

Employment and business activities

If employed, consider an employer’s letter confirming your role, approved leave and expected return. Check that it agrees with your payslips, bank records and proposed dates.

If self-employed, explain the business and provide relevant records such as invoices, customer payments or accounts. Applicants helping with a family business should describe their actual role and the records available.

Study and family responsibilities

Explain any course timetable, caring responsibilities or other commitments that relate to your return. Where you care for a relative, describe how that responsibility will be covered during the trip.

A family record may establish a relationship, but a short explanation can help show the practical responsibility involved.

Unemployment or financial support from a partner

If you are unemployed, explain your situation honestly. Set out how you are supported, what you do in Thailand and your plans after the visit.

Do not invent a job, salary or ownership of family property. Prepare the evidence you genuinely have and address gaps clearly.

Read our detailed guide to proving a genuine temporary visit to Australia.

Step 4: Explain how the trip will be funded

Prepare a budget covering travel, accommodation and everyday expenses. Identify the funds available and who will cover each part of the trip.

A bank balance without context can leave questions unanswered. Explain substantial recent deposits where relevant and provide records of their source.

If a partner or relative is paying, their supporting letter should state what they will provide. Check that their explanation matches the applicant’s form and travel plan.

Use a budget based on the proposed visit rather than assuming that a particular bank balance guarantees approval.

Step 5: Organise your supporting documents

Follow the application’s document instructions. Depending on your circumstances, preparation may include:

  • Your passport and requested identity records.
  • A statement explaining the visit.
  • Financial records and an explanation of funding.
  • Employment, business or study documents.
  • Relevant family commitments.
  • An invitation and accommodation details.
  • Relationship evidence when visiting a partner.
  • Previous visa decisions or explanations where relevant.

For an invitation, give practical details: who is inviting you, your relationship, where you will stay and what support they will provide. Avoid copying a letter that describes someone else’s circumstances.

Check names, dates and passport details across the documents. Provide English translations of non-English records, with the translator information required by Home Affairs.

See our document translation and certification guide.

Step 6: Complete the application in ImmiAccount

Use ImmiAccount to prepare the online application. Select the correct stream and answer the questions accurately.

Check employment, relationship and financial information against your documents. Answer questions about previous refusals and immigration history fully, using the relevant records to confirm dates.

Upload readable files in the appropriate categories. Before submitting, review the completed form and attachments together. Keep a copy of the application, payment receipt and supporting documents.

Government fee and other costs

The overseas Tourist stream currently has a government application charge from AUD 250 per applicant. Check the amount payable before submission.

Budget separately for any required checks, translations, appointment travel and professional assistance. When obtaining a service quotation, ask which expenses are included.

Our Australian visa costs guide explains how to prepare your budget.

Step 7: Follow biometric and health instructions

Monitor your email and ImmiAccount after submission. Read any request carefully and note its deadline.

Australian Immi App or VFS appointment?

Thailand is an eligible location for the Australian Immi App. Applicants with the required passport and a biometric request letter containing a Visa Lodgement Number beginning with AUI may be eligible to complete their identity check through the app.

If the number does not begin with AUI, centre attendance is required. Follow your request letter and the official app guidance before booking. Successful app submission can remove the need for a centre visit unless Home Affairs gives further instructions.

See our biometrics guide and VFS centre and appointment guide.

Medical examinations and police certificates

Check the requirements for your application and follow any individual request. If a medical examination is required, use an approved panel physician and the referral details supplied.

Read our guides to Australian visa medical examinations and police and character requirements.

Waiting for the decision

Check ImmiAccount for messages and outstanding requests. If you cannot provide something requested, explain the situation promptly rather than allowing the deadline to pass unanswered.

Use the official processing time guide when planning. An estimate is not a promised decision date.

Keep your contact and passport information current. Avoid making non-refundable travel arrangements based on an expected approval date.

Read the visa grant before travelling

If granted, check your permitted stay, entry arrangements and conditions. A visa’s validity period and the length of each permitted stay are different details.

Check the actual grant rather than assuming you received the dates or entries requested. Use the grant notice and VEVO to confirm your position.

If a No Further Stay condition such as 8503 applies, it restricts further visa options in Australia. Getting married does not remove that condition or extend the permitted stay.

See our guides to electronic visas and VEVO and marrying in Australia on a visitor visa.

What if the application is refused?

Read the full refusal decision before preparing another application. Identify what the decision-maker questioned and consider what accurate explanation or evidence could address it.

More documents are useful only when they answer the relevant concerns. Explain changes in circumstances and check any review rights and deadlines stated in the decision.

Our Australian tourist visa refusal guide explains how to approach the next step.

Frequently asked questions

Can my Australian partner pay for my visit?

Your application can explain financial support from your partner. Specify the arrangement and provide supporting records, while also explaining your own circumstances and travel plans.

Should I buy flights before applying?

Home Affairs recommends booking flights after the visa is granted. Proposed dates and an itinerary can explain your plans while keeping your arrangements flexible.

Can I work on a visitor visa?

You cannot work on this visitor visa. Plan the trip using funds available to you rather than relying on earning money after arrival.

Can I apply while a partner visa is pending?

A pending partner application does not itself provide permission to visit Australia. Check whether a separate visitor application is appropriate, disclose the pending application and explain the temporary visit honestly.

Review the official partner visa FAQs and your own correspondence for travel and location instructions.

Do I need a visa agent?

You can prepare your own application. If you choose assistance, ask what the service includes and who will handle it. Professional help does not guarantee approval.
