Renewing what many people call a Thai retirement visa usually means applying for another annual extension of stay based on retirement. Start preparing before your current permission expires, particularly if you rely on money held in a Thai bank account.
Check your expiry date now. Your passport stamp shows when your current permission to stay ends. Ask the immigration office responsible for your address when it will accept your extension application; do not rely on a fixed 30-day rule.
Retirement renewal document checklist
- Passport and copies of the relevant passport, entry and extension pages.
- Completed extension application form, usually TM.7, and the photograph required by your office.
- Evidence of your address in Thailand, as requested locally.
- Bank, income or pension evidence for the financial method you are using.
- Any additional forms or supporting records requested by your immigration office.
Take originals where requested. Your office can tell you which copies need signing and how recent a bank letter or statement must be.
Check your financial method
Common retirement extension methods involve THB 800,000 in a Thai bank account, qualifying income of THB 65,000 per month, or a permitted combination where accepted. The evidence and timing differ by method. If you use a bank deposit, check both the period before your application and the balance that must remain after approval.
Do not withdraw funds based only on the date your new stamp is issued. Ask your immigration office to confirm the continuing balance requirement that applies to your case.
When should you prepare?
Review your documents well before expiry. This gives you time to obtain a bank letter, correct address records or resolve a missing document. The period during which you can submit the application should be checked with the local office handling it.
If you are already close to expiry, contact the office promptly. An application is only complete when it meets the office’s requirements.
After your extension is granted
- Check the new permission-to-stay date stamped in your passport.
- Keep the required bank balance if your extension was approved using the deposit method.
- Continue any applicable 90-day reporting and address notifications.
- If you plan to travel abroad, check your re-entry permit before leaving.
