Applying to stay in Thailand with your Thai husband or wife? Getting the paperwork together early can make the marriage visa and extension process much easier. This checklist shows the documents commonly requested and the points to confirm before you apply.
First, check which application you are making. An initial Non-Immigrant O visa and an extension of stay based on marriage are separate applications. Their document lists can differ, and your local immigration office may request additional evidence.
Documents for the foreign spouse
- Valid passport and copies of the relevant identification, visa, entry and permission-to-stay pages.
- Completed application form for the visa or extension you are requesting.
- Recent passport photographs, if required for that application.
- Evidence of your current immigration status in Thailand, if applying from within the country.
- Evidence of the required finances, where applicable.
Marriage and Thai spouse documents
- Marriage certificate and any related Thai marriage registration documents requested by the office.
- Your Thai spouse’s identification card.
- Your Thai spouse’s house registration document (Tabian Baan).
- Your spouse’s passport, if relevant to the application.
- Both spouses’ signatures on copies where requested.
If you married outside Thailand, ask the office handling your case how it wants the overseas marriage certificate presented. Translation, legalisation or registration steps can depend on where the document was issued and the application you are making.
Evidence of your shared address
For an extension in Thailand, immigration may ask for evidence showing where you live together. Prepare your rental agreement or property documents, a map to your home and photographs of you both at the property if your local office requires them. Check that the address you give is consistent across your application and supporting documents.
Financial evidence
Financial requirements depend on the application and the applicant’s circumstances. They can include evidence of qualifying income or funds in a bank account. The Royal Thai Embassy in London currently lists an income or balance requirement for its spouse and family Non-Immigrant O application; an extension lodged at Thai Immigration has its own evidence requirements.
Before moving money or booking an appointment, confirm the amount, account requirements, evidence and timing that apply to your application. A bank statement accepted for an embassy visa application should not be assumed to satisfy a later extension application.
Before you visit immigration
- Check your current permission-to-stay expiry date and allow time to gather the documents.
- Ask the immigration office where you will apply for its current checklist.
- Take originals as well as copies when the office requests them.
- Check whether your Thai spouse needs to attend with you.
- Keep copies of everything you submit.
