Planning a UK holiday from Thailand or a visit to your partner, family or friends? You may hear people call the visa a “UK tourist visa”. The official route is the UK Standard Visitor visa. Tourism and visiting loved ones are among the reasons someone can use it.

Chat with us on WhatsAppIs a UK tourist visa different from a Standard Visitor visa?
No. “Tourist visa” is a common description, while Standard Visitor visa is the name used for this UK visa route. It covers holidays, visits to family or friends, and certain other permitted activities. The purpose of the trip should be clear and accurately stated in the application.
Who needs to apply?
A Thai citizen travelling on a Thai passport will generally need to obtain a visitor visa before travelling to the UK. The applicant completes an online application and attends a visa application centre appointment. They can apply up to three months before the intended trip.
If you are arranging a visit for your partner, read our guide to sponsoring a Thai girlfriend’s UK visitor visa. A sponsor can help with travel costs or accommodation, but the applicant must still meet the visitor requirements.
What must an applicant show?
The central question is whether the applicant is a genuine visitor. Their plans and supporting evidence should show that they:
- have a clear, permitted reason for visiting the UK;
- intend to leave at the end of the visit;
- can afford the trip and return journey, either personally or with genuine support from someone else; and
- will not make the UK their main home through frequent or successive visits.
There is no single document that guarantees approval. The information in the application should fit together: travel plans, finances, employment or other circumstances in Thailand, and any support offered by a UK host. For a practical starting point, see our UK visitor visa document checklist.
How long can a Standard Visitor stay?
A Standard Visitor can usually stay for up to six months per visit. That does not mean every proposed six-month trip will automatically appear credible. The length of the visit should make sense alongside the applicant’s circumstances, available funds and reason for travelling.
There is no blanket rule limiting visitors to 180 days in every 12-month period. However, repeated long visits can raise questions about whether someone is effectively living in the UK. Read our explanation of repeat UK visitor visas and frequent visits.
What can’t someone do on this visa?
A Standard Visitor cannot use the route to live in the UK, claim public funds or take ordinary work with a UK company. There are specific permitted business and paid engagement activities, so check the rules if the trip involves work of any kind.
It is also the wrong route if the plan is to marry or give notice of marriage in the UK. The appropriate route depends on whether the couple plans to leave after the wedding or live together in the UK. See our guide to marrying in the UK as a visitor.
Applying from Thailand: the basic steps
- Confirm that the planned activities are allowed under the Standard Visitor rules.
- Complete the online application with accurate travel, personal and financial details.
- Prepare relevant supporting documents, including evidence of any financial or accommodation support.
- Book and attend the visa application centre appointment.
- Wait for the decision before relying on the trip going ahead.
Our step-by-step guide for Thai citizens explains the process in more detail. If an earlier application was refused, address the actual reasons in the refusal letter before applying again.
