Applying for a UK visa from Thailand? You may need a tuberculosis (TB) test before submitting your application. This is common for spouse, partner, student and other routes involving a stay of six months or more. A fiancé or proposed civil partner visa can also require a TB test even though the initial visa is for less than six months.
The test must be completed at a Home Office approved clinic. A certificate from another hospital or clinic will not meet the UK visa requirement.

Who Needs a TB Test for a UK Visa?
Under the general rule, a TB certificate is required if you are applying to come to the UK for six months or more, you have lived in a listed country such as Thailand for at least six months, and you lived in a listed country within the six months before your application.
A TB test can also be required for a fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner family visa, or a Returning Resident application, even though the intended visa period may be shorter than six months. Your nationality alone does not determine the answer; your recent residence and visa route matter.

Where Can You Take the Test in Thailand?
Use a clinic on the current GOV.UK list of approved TB testing clinics in Thailand. The published list includes BNH Hospital and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Bangkok.
Contact the clinic to arrange an appointment and state that the test is for a UK visa application. Check its current fee, opening times and documents to bring before travelling. A routine test at another hospital cannot simply be substituted for an approved UK visa TB certificate.
What Happens at the Appointment?
- The clinic checks your identity and medical information.
- Adults are normally screened using a chest X-ray.
- If the X-ray result is unclear, the clinic may ask for a sputum sample and further testing.
- If the screening shows no active TB, the clinic issues a certificate for your visa application.
Further testing can delay the certificate. The clinic will explain the medical findings and next steps.
How Long Is the TB Certificate Valid?
The certificate is generally valid for six months from the date of the chest X-ray. Arrange the test early enough to allow for any follow-up, but avoid obtaining the certificate so early that it expires before you apply.
Do Children Need a TB Certificate?
If a child falls within the TB testing requirement, take the child to an approved clinic. Every child must be assessed by a clinician, but children under 11 do not normally have a chest X-ray. The clinic may issue a certificate after its assessment and health questionnaire. Include the child’s certificate with the visa application.
What If the Applicant Is Pregnant?
Tell the approved clinic before screening. GOV.UK lists options that may include an X-ray with additional shielding during the second or third trimester, a sputum test, or waiting until after delivery. The clinic can discuss the medical options, costs and possible delay.
Are There Exemptions?
Some applicants do not need a TB test, including diplomats accredited to the UK and returning UK residents who have not been away for more than two years. The residence and visa-route rules can also mean a test is unnecessary. If you have lived outside Thailand recently, check the exact dates and countries before booking.
