What Is a UK Marriage Visitor Visa?
It is a visitor visa for someone coming to the UK to give notice of marriage or civil partnership, marry or form a civil partnership at an approved venue, and leave after a temporary visit. It normally allows a stay of up to six months.
It does not provide a route to settle in the UK. A Marriage Visitor cannot extend this visa or switch to another visa from within the UK, work, study, claim public funds or use repeated visits to make the UK their main home.
Who Can Apply?
An applicant must generally show that they are at least 18, free to marry or enter a civil partnership, in a genuine relationship, able to support the trip and return or onward journey, and genuinely intend to leave the UK at the end of the visit.
The evidence should explain the wedding plans and the applicant’s circumstances outside the UK. A UK partner can help pay for the visit, but the application should still explain the applicant’s own circumstances and why the trip is temporary.
Marriage Visitor Visa or Fiancé Visa?
These routes serve different plans. A Marriage Visitor visa is for a couple who will marry in the UK but will not settle there on that visit. A fiancé or fiancée family visa is for an eligible couple planning to marry and then apply to continue living together in the UK under the family route.
Do not use a Standard Visitor visa to give notice or marry. If marriage in the UK is the purpose of the trip, check the correct marriage or family visa route before travelling. The choice depends heavily on whether the applicant intends to leave or settle after the wedding.
What Documents May Be Needed?
The exact evidence depends on the couple’s circumstances, but an application may include:
- A passport valid for the whole UK visit.
- Evidence of a genuine relationship and the couple’s marriage plans.
- Venue correspondence, a booking or other evidence of the proposed ceremony.
- Evidence that the applicant is free to marry, such as a divorce document or a former spouse’s death certificate where relevant.
- Financial evidence showing how the visit and return journey will be paid for.
- Information about accommodation and the planned length of the visit.
- Evidence explaining the applicant’s circumstances and plans after leaving the UK.
- Certified translations of relevant documents that are not in English or Welsh.
Do not assume a venue booking alone guarantees a visa. The decision maker considers whether the applicant meets all the Marriage Visitor requirements.
How Do You Apply from Thailand?
- Confirm the visa route. Decide whether the applicant will leave the UK after marrying or intends to live there.
- Prepare the evidence. Explain the relationship, ceremony plans, funding and intention to leave where applying as a Marriage Visitor.
- Apply online. Complete the official UK Marriage Visitor application and pay the government fee.
- Attend biometrics. Follow the instructions for the visa application centre in Thailand.
- Wait for the decision. Avoid relying on a fixed wedding date until the visa has been granted.
GOV.UK says the earliest application date is three months before travel and that decisions are usually made within three weeks after the application, identity check and documents are complete. These are guidance times, not guarantees. Check the current government fee and process before applying.
Giving Notice and Booking the Ceremony
Marriage registration and notice requirements are separate from the visa application. Contact the register office or authorised venue where you intend to marry to confirm its documents, notice period and availability. Make sure the wedding timetable fits the visa validity and any notice requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Thai citizen marry in the UK on a Standard Visitor visa?
A Standard Visitor visa is not the route to choose when the purpose is to give notice and marry in the UK. Apply for the appropriate Marriage Visitor or family visa according to the couple’s plans.
Can we switch to a spouse visa after marrying on a Marriage Visitor visa?
No. The Marriage Visitor route does not permit an in-country switch. If the couple wants to live together in the UK, assess the family visa route before applying.
Does a British partner guarantee approval?
No. The applicant must meet the visitor requirements, including a genuine intention to leave the UK and adequate funding for the trip.
Does the Thai applicant need a TB test?
