If your Thai wife or partner plans to move to the UK to live with you, they will usually need to apply for a UK spouse or partner visa under the family visa rules. This is often called a “settlement visa”, although the first visa does not grant indefinite leave to remain.
The application must bring together evidence of your relationship, finances, accommodation and the other requirements that apply to your circumstances. Planning those documents before submitting the online form can prevent avoidable problems.

Ask us on WhatsAppWhat is a UK settlement visa?
People often use “settlement visa” to describe a spouse or partner visa for someone coming to live in the UK. The initial family visa gives temporary permission to live in the UK. If the relevant requirements continue to be met, the person may later extend their visa and eventually apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
If you are returning to the UK after living in Thailand, read our guide on which visa your Thai spouse needs when you move back to the UK.
Who can apply as a spouse or partner?
The applicant and sponsor must meet the family visa rules. This includes requirements concerning their relationship, intention to live together in the UK, finances, accommodation and English language ability. A tuberculosis certificate may also be required when applying from Thailand.
Being married does not, by itself, guarantee a visa. If you are engaged and intend to marry in the UK, the fiancé(e) visa route may be relevant instead. A visitor visa is for a temporary visit and should not be used as a route to move permanently to the UK.
Financial requirement
Many new partner applicants must show income of at least £29,000 a year. Different rules can apply in some cases, including where the sponsor receives certain benefits or where transitional arrangements apply to an existing family visa. Income, pensions, self-employment and cash savings have different evidence rules.
Do not rely on the old £18,600 figure without checking which rules apply to your case. See our UK spouse visa financial requirements guide, and check the current GOV.UK financial guidance before applying.
English language and TB testing
For an initial spouse or partner application, an applicant generally needs to meet the required English language standard unless an exemption applies. Where a test is needed, it must be an approved Secure English Language Test at the appropriate level.
An applicant living in Thailand may also need a TB test certificate from an approved clinic. Check the requirements and timing before booking tests or submitting the application.
What evidence will you need?
- Passports and evidence of the sponsor’s UK status.
- A marriage certificate or other evidence of the qualifying relationship.
- Evidence that the relationship is genuine and continuing.
- Financial documents that meet the rules for the income sources relied upon.
- Evidence of suitable accommodation in the UK.
- English language and TB evidence where required.
- Relevant documents for any children included in an application.
The exact checklist depends on the couple’s circumstances. For example, a sponsor returning from Thailand, a self-employed sponsor and a sponsor relying on pension income may need quite different financial documents.
How long does the visa last?
A successful spouse or partner application made from outside the UK normally grants permission for 2 years and 9 months. The applicant can then apply to extend their permission if they remain eligible. On the five-year partner route, ILR may be possible after the required continuous period, provided all the settlement requirements are met.
UK immigration status is increasingly evidenced digitally through an eVisa and UKVI account. Follow the instructions in the decision notice about accessing and checking the granted status; do not rely on the old process for collecting a residence card from a Post Office.
Fees and processing times
The applicant normally pays the Home Office application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge. Priority services may be offered for an additional charge. Government fees, availability and processing times can change, so check them when you are ready to submit rather than relying on figures from an older article.
Our professional fee depends on the complexity of the case. We will explain the work and costs before you instruct us.
