Applying for a UK visa from Thailand? The documents you need depend on the visa route. A holiday visit, a spouse application and a student application have different requirements, so a single checklist cannot cover every case.
This guide starts with the UK Standard Visitor visa, which is commonly used by Thai nationals visiting a partner, family or friends. It also explains how to check the requirements if you are applying for another type of UK visa.

For a Standard Visitor application, start with these questions: Does the evidence explain the purpose of the trip, show how it will be paid for and support the applicant’s intention to leave the UK afterwards?
1. Passport and application details
- A passport or other accepted travel document valid for the whole proposed UK stay.
- Accurate information for the online visa application, including travel dates, accommodation, employment, finances and relevant immigration history.
- Previous passports or travel records where they help explain earlier trips.
- Evidence of a name change, where names differ across important documents.
2. Purpose and plans for the visit
- A clear explanation of why the applicant wants to visit the UK and for how long.
- Details of where the applicant will stay.
- An invitation or explanation from the person being visited, where relevant.
- Evidence of the relationship, if it helps explain the visit to a partner or family member.
A complicated itinerary or paid-for flights are not a substitute for a credible application. Make travel arrangements with the possibility of a refusal in mind.
3. Finances and circumstances in Thailand
- Financial evidence showing how the applicant can afford the trip, or evidence of suitable support from another person.
- Employment evidence, business records, study confirmation or other documents relevant to the applicant’s actual circumstances.
- Information about ongoing commitments and plans after returning to Thailand.
- An explanation of unusual deposits or differences between the application form and bank records, where needed.
There is no universal bank balance that guarantees a visitor visa. The proposed spending should make sense alongside the applicant’s income, available funds, length of stay and any support offered by a sponsor.
4. Documents from a UK sponsor
If someone in the UK will pay for travel, provide accommodation or cover living costs, the evidence should explain:
- What support they will provide and how.
- Their relationship to the applicant.
- Whether they can afford the support while meeting their own commitments.
- Their lawful status in the UK, where relevant.

Do Thai documents need translating?
Documents submitted in a language other than English or Welsh need a full translation that can be independently verified. The translation must include the translator’s confirmation of accuracy, the date, their name and signature, and their contact details.
Check that names, dates and amounts are consistent across the translated documents and the application form.
How do you apply for a UK visa in Thailand?
- Choose the correct visa route. Check whether the trip is a temporary visit or whether a family, work, study or other route is required.
- Complete the official online application. Answer the questions accurately and disclose relevant previous refusals or immigration issues.
- Pay the applicable government fee. Check the current amount on GOV.UK when applying.
- Follow the document instructions. Upload or provide supporting documents using the options given during the application process.
- Attend the appointment. Follow the instructions for the visa application centre and provide biometrics where required.
- Wait for the decision. Check current processing information before making fixed travel plans.

Applying for a spouse or another UK visa?
Do not use the visitor list as a spouse visa checklist. A partner or spouse application has its own rules and evidence requirements, which may include relationship, financial, accommodation, English language and tuberculosis test evidence, depending on the case.
