A UK Standard Visitor Visa allows eligible Thai nationals to travel to the UK for tourism, visiting family or friends, spending time with a British partner and certain other permitted activities.
For applicants applying from Thailand, the most important part of the application is usually showing that the visit is genuine, affordable and temporary.
UKVI will consider the applicant's financial position, personal circumstances in Thailand, reason for travel, relationship with any UK sponsor and whether they are likely to leave the UK at the end of the visit.
A Standard Visitor Visa currently costs £135 and normally permits a stay in the UK of up to 6 months.

Thai passport holders normally need to obtain a UK visa before travelling to Britain as visitors.
The Standard Visitor route can be used for activities such as:
- tourism and holidays;
- visiting family and friends;
- visiting a boyfriend, girlfriend or partner;
- certain business activities;
- short periods of study where permitted;
- certain medical visits; and
- other activities specifically allowed under the Visitor Rules.
The visitor route cannot normally be used to work for a UK company, live in Britain through repeated visits or marry in the UK where marriage is the purpose of the trip.
How Long Can a Thai Visitor Stay in the UK?
A Standard Visitor Visa normally allows a stay of up to 6 months.
However, the proposed length of stay should make sense for the individual applicant.
For example, UKVI may consider whether a person who has full-time employment, children, a business or other responsibilities in Thailand can realistically spend several months in Britain.
The fact that the visa allows a maximum stay of six months does not mean every applicant should request six months.
What Are the Main UK Visitor Visa Requirements?
The applicant must satisfy UKVI that they are a genuine visitor.
In practical terms, this usually means showing that the applicant:
- intends to leave the UK at the end of the visit;
- will not use repeated visits to effectively live in the UK;
- has a genuine reason for travelling;
- has enough money available for the trip;
- can pay for the return or onward journey;
- will not undertake prohibited work; and
- will only carry out activities permitted under the Visitor Rules.
How Do You Apply for a UK Visitor Visa From Thailand?
The application is normally made online before travel.
A typical process involves:
- checking that the Standard Visitor route is appropriate;
- completing the online visa application;
- paying the government application fee;
- booking the biometric appointment;
- preparing and uploading supporting documents;
- attending the biometric appointment; and
- waiting for the UKVI decision.
The application form and supporting documents should tell the same story.
How Much Is a UK Visitor Visa?
As of September 2026, the government fee for a Standard Visitor Visa of up to six months is £135.
Long-term visitor visas are also available for eligible travellers, but each individual visit is still normally limited to a maximum of six months.
Visa fees can change, so applicants should check the current Home Office fee before submitting the application.
How Early Can You Apply?
A Standard Visitor Visa application can normally be submitted up to 3 months before the intended travel date.
It is usually sensible to prepare the supporting evidence well before the intended journey.
Can Someone in the UK Sponsor the Applicant?
Yes.
The Visitor Rules allow travel, accommodation and maintenance costs to be provided by a third party where that person has a genuine personal or professional relationship with the applicant and can genuinely provide the promised support.
A sponsor might pay for:
- air tickets;
- accommodation;
- food and daily expenses;
- travel within the UK; and
- other reasonable costs of the visit.
However, financial sponsorship does not remove the requirement for the applicant to show that they are a genuine visitor.
Is There a Minimum Bank Balance?
No fixed minimum bank balance is specified for a UK Standard Visitor Visa.
The amount of money available should be reasonable for the proposed trip.
UKVI may consider:
- the cost of the flights;
- the length of the visit;
- where the applicant will stay;
- who is paying for the trip;
- the applicant's normal income and expenditure; and
- whether significant deposits can be explained.
Large Deposits in the Bank Account
Large unexplained deposits shortly before a visa application can cause problems.
If a British sponsor has transferred money to the applicant, that does not automatically make the application unsuitable, but the source and purpose of the funds should be transparent.
Trying to create an artificial bank balance can make the application less credible.
What Documents Are Needed?
There is no single document checklist that is correct for every visitor visa application.
Evidence should be selected according to the applicant's individual circumstances.
Documents may include:
- a valid passport;
- bank statements;
- employment evidence;
- business documents;
- property or accommodation evidence;
- evidence relating to children or family responsibilities;
- previous travel evidence;
- details of the proposed trip;
- sponsor documents;
- relationship evidence where relevant; and
- English translations of relevant Thai-language documents.
Employment Evidence
An employed applicant may provide evidence such as:
- an employer letter;
- payslips;
- bank statements showing salary payments;
- approved holiday or leave confirmation; and
- evidence of the expected return to work.
The exact evidence will depend on the applicant's employment situation.
Can an Unemployed Thai Applicant Get a UK Visitor Visa?
Yes.
There is no immigration rule stating that a visitor must be employed.
However, an unemployed applicant should explain their circumstances clearly.
Relevant reasons to return to Thailand might include:
- children;
- parents or dependants;
- property or accommodation;
- a partner remaining in Thailand;
- education;
- business interests;
- financial commitments; or
- other established responsibilities.
What Are Strong Ties to Thailand?
There is no official list of documents that automatically proves strong ties.
UKVI looks at the overall circumstances.
Useful evidence may relate to:
- employment;
- business ownership;
- family responsibilities;
- children;
- property;
- education;
- financial commitments; and
- previous compliant international travel.
The application should demonstrate why the applicant's life remains based in Thailand.
UK Visitor Visa for a Thai Girlfriend
Many applications from Thailand involve a British boyfriend or partner inviting a Thai girlfriend to the UK.
This is perfectly possible under the Standard Visitor route.
The application should demonstrate:
- that the relationship is genuine;
- the purpose of the visit;
- who will pay for the trip;
- where the applicant will stay; and
- why the applicant will return to Thailand.

Can a British Partner Pay for Everything?
Yes.
The sponsor can potentially pay for the entire visit where the arrangement is genuine and financially realistic.
There is no need to pretend that the applicant is paying for the holiday if the British partner is actually covering the costs.
The sponsor's financial evidence should demonstrate that the promised support is affordable.
Sponsor Documents
A UK sponsor may provide:
- a passport copy;
- an invitation or sponsor letter;
- bank statements;
- payslips;
- employment or self-employment evidence;
- proof of UK address; and
- evidence that suitable accommodation is available.
Relationship Evidence
Where the applicant is travelling to visit a boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse or partner, relationship evidence can help explain the purpose of the trip.
This might include:
- photographs together;
- flight bookings;
- passport stamps;
- holidays together;
- messages or call records;
- money transfers where relevant; and
- a short relationship history.
It is usually unnecessary to upload thousands of pages of private messages.
Does the Applicant Need to Own Property?
No.
Property ownership is not a requirement for a visitor visa.
It can be relevant evidence in some cases, but applicants who rent accommodation or live with relatives can also qualify.
Does Previous Travel Help?
A positive travel history can be useful.
For example, an applicant who has previously travelled abroad and returned to Thailand in accordance with the immigration rules may be able to demonstrate a pattern of genuine travel.
However, previous international travel is not mandatory.
First-Time Travellers
A first-time traveller can still obtain a UK Visitor Visa.
Where there is little or no previous travel history, the application should focus on the applicant's real circumstances, finances, purpose of travel and reasons to return to Thailand.
Can a Standard Visitor Work in the UK?
Generally, no.
The Visitor Rules prohibit normal paid or unpaid work for a UK company and self-employment, subject to certain specific permitted visitor activities.
If the true purpose is employment, a visitor visa is not the appropriate route.
Can a Visitor Get Married in the UK?
A Standard Visitor cannot use the ordinary visitor route where the purpose is to marry, form a civil partnership or give notice of marriage or civil partnership.
Someone travelling specifically to marry and then leave the UK should normally consider a Marriage Visitor Visa.
If the intention is to marry and settle permanently in Britain, the relevant family visa route should be considered instead.
UK Visitor Visa or UK Spouse Visa?
The routes have very different purposes.
A Standard Visitor Visa is for a temporary visit.
A UK Spouse Visa is intended for an eligible husband or wife who plans to live in the UK with their partner.
Using a visitor visa where the genuine intention is permanent settlement can cause serious problems.
How Long Does a UK Visitor Visa Take?
Processing times can change according to demand, location and the complexity of the individual application.
Applicants should check the current UKVI processing-time guidance before finalising travel plans.
Priority processing may sometimes be available for an additional fee.
Should Flights Be Purchased Before the Visa Is Granted?
It is normally sensible to avoid expensive non-refundable travel arrangements until the visa decision has been made.
The intended travel dates can be stated in the application without taking unnecessary financial risk.
What Happens at the Biometrics Appointment?
After the application is completed online, the applicant will normally attend a visa application centre to provide biometric information.
This normally includes fingerprints and a digital photograph.
The supporting documents should also be uploaded using the appropriate document submission process.
Common UK Visitor Visa Refusal Reasons
Visitor visa refusals can arise from many different issues.
Common problems include:
- unclear financial circumstances;
- large unexplained deposits;
- weak evidence of circumstances in Thailand;
- inconsistent information;
- unrealistic proposed travel plans;
- poorly explained sponsorship;
- weak relationship evidence where relevant;
- previous immigration history not being addressed; or
- UKVI not being satisfied that the applicant intends to leave the UK.
What if the Applicant Has Already Been Refused?
A previous refusal does not automatically prevent a successful future application.
However, the reasons for refusal should be examined carefully before reapplying.
Submitting essentially the same evidence again without addressing the decision can simply result in another refusal.
Read our guide: UK Visitor Visa Refused – When Can We Reapply?
Can You Reapply Straight Away?
There is generally no mandatory waiting period after an ordinary visitor visa refusal.
However, the important question is whether the issues identified in the refusal have actually been addressed.
There is little benefit in submitting another application immediately if nothing has changed.
Applying for a UK Visitor Visa From Thailand
A strong application should be prepared around the applicant's real circumstances rather than copied from another person's successful case.
Two applicants may both be visiting a British partner but have completely different:
- employment situations;
- financial circumstances;
- family responsibilities;
- travel histories;
- relationships; and
- reasons for returning to Thailand.
The supporting evidence should reflect those individual circumstances.
