A UK eVisa is a digital record of a person’s immigration status and the conditions attached to it. It can show, for example, the type of permission held and whether the person is allowed to work or study. The holder accesses it online through a UK Visas and Immigration account.

Is an eVisa the same as applying for a visa online?
No. An online application is the process of requesting immigration permission. An eVisa is the digital record of permission after it has been granted. Applying online does not mean the application has been approved, and receiving an application reference does not itself create an eVisa.
Applicants must still complete the steps required for their route, which may include providing documents and biometrics. Follow the instructions issued for the actual application.
How do you view a UK eVisa?
You need access to a UKVI account. Once it is set up and linked to your immigration status, you can use the official service to view your eVisa and obtain a share code.
If you have not yet set up access, start with GOV.UK’s UKVI account instructions. Creating the account and accessing an eVisa are free.
What is a share code used for?
A share code lets another party check the relevant part of your immigration status online. You may need one to demonstrate permission to work, rent a home or access another service. Generate it using the official UKVI service rather than sending someone your account password.
What should you check before travelling?
Sign in and confirm that the status shown is correct and that your current passport or travel document is linked to your UKVI account. Check this before booking or taking an international trip, especially if your passport, name or contact details have changed.

Does an eVisa show that my pending application was approved?
Do not infer the outcome from a status message alone. Wait for the formal UKVI decision and follow its instructions. A “decision made” notification may not tell you whether the application succeeded.

What if the eVisa details are wrong?
First check whether the UKVI account itself needs updating. If the immigration status displayed contains an error, use the official eVisa error-reporting service. Keep a record of the issue and seek help promptly if travel is approaching.
Does my Thai wife need a UKVI account?
If your wife has digital UK immigration status, she needs a way to access and use it. This can apply to spouse visa holders and people with settlement or other UK status. The steps depend on the status and any account already created; do not create duplicate accounts without checking the official instructions.
