A UK fiancé visa is a family visa for an eligible couple who plan to marry or form a civil partnership in the UK within six months of the applicant’s arrival, then apply to live together in the UK as partners. It is different from a Marriage Visitor visa, which is for someone who intends to leave the UK after the ceremony.
Key point: A fiancé or fiancée cannot work or study during the initial six-month permission. After the marriage, they must apply for further permission as a spouse or partner. They can work if that application is approved.

Who Is the Fiancé Visa For?
This route is for a couple who intend to marry or enter a civil partnership in the UK and make their life together there. The applicant normally applies from outside the UK. After arriving, the couple must complete the marriage or civil partnership within the six-month permission and then apply for the next stage of the family route.
The couple must show that their relationship is genuine and continuing, that they have met in person, that any previous marriages have ended, and that they intend to live together permanently after the ceremony. The UK-based partner must have an eligible immigration status, and the application must meet the relevant financial, accommodation and English language requirements.
What Are the Main Requirements?
- Relationship: evidence that you have met in person and have a genuine, continuing relationship.
- Marriage plans: a credible intention to marry or form a civil partnership in the UK within six months.
- Financial requirement: most new partner applications must meet the current minimum income requirement of £29,000 a year, or qualify through another permitted way of meeting the rules. Different rules can apply in certain benefit cases.
- Accommodation: suitable accommodation for the couple without overcrowding.
- English language: an approved way of meeting the initial requirement, normally at least A1 speaking and listening unless an exemption applies.
- TB certificate: a valid certificate from an approved clinic where the pre-entry TB rules apply.
The financial evidence rules are detailed. Employment, self-employment, pensions and savings are assessed differently, so check which category applies before collecting documents.
Fiancé Visa or Marriage Visitor Visa?
Choose according to what you intend to do after marrying. If the applicant intends to live in the UK with their partner, the fiancé family route may be appropriate. If they intend to marry during a temporary trip and then leave the UK, consider the Marriage Visitor visa.
A Marriage Visitor cannot switch to a spouse visa in the UK. A successful fiancé visa holder can apply from within the UK for further permission as a spouse or civil partner after the ceremony.
Can My Thai Fiancée Work in the UK?

Does a Fiancé Visa Require a TB Test?

How Does the Application Work?
- Check eligibility: establish the correct route, the sponsor’s status and the financial category.
- Prepare evidence: organise relationship, income, accommodation, English language, TB and marriage-plan documents as applicable.
- Apply from Thailand: complete the online family visa application and pay the applicable government fee.
- Attend biometrics: follow the visa application centre instructions.
- After approval: travel to the UK, marry within the permitted period and apply for the spouse or partner stage before permission expires.
What Happens After the Wedding?
The applicant must make a further family visa application from within the UK as a spouse or civil partner. That application has its own government fee and normally involves the Immigration Health Surcharge. The six months spent on a fiancé visa do not count towards the usual five-year qualifying period for settlement as a partner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a fiancé visa the same as a spouse visa?
No. The fiancé stage is for entering the UK to marry. The spouse or partner stage is the further permission sought after the marriage, allowing the couple to live together in the UK if granted.
Can we marry in Thailand and apply directly for a spouse visa?
If you are already legally married and meet the family visa requirements, you may be able to apply directly as spouses. That avoids the separate UK fiancé and post-marriage applications. The right choice depends on your plans and documents.
Does the fiancé visa itself include NHS cover?
An applicant applying from outside the UK for permission of six months or less does not normally pay the Immigration Health Surcharge at that stage. Plan for healthcare and suitable insurance during the fiancé period; the surcharge is normally relevant to the later spouse application.
Can we apply for the spouse stage before the wedding?
No. The application following the fiancé stage is based on the completed marriage or civil partnership. Plan the ceremony and application timing before the six-month permission expires.
