The UK Spouse Visa and the Language Requirements

UK Spouse Visa Language Requirements

If you are planning on taking your Thai wife to the UK, she will need a UK Spouse Visa. One of the critical requirements for this visa is that she must be able to speak and understand a certain amount of English and she will need to prove this by passing the A1 (IELTS) English Test.

The A1 English Test

The A1 English Test requires the applicant to be able to speak a basic level of English, enough to hold a basic conversation and enough that they will quickly understand a lot more when placed in an environment where English is solely spoken. It is intended as a platform and is a great starting point that will stand your wife in good stead for the future.

What changes have been made to the A1 English Test?

The A1 English Test is now known as the IELTS Thailand test

An additional test is the IELTS Life Skills test which is a single test aim at applicants with level A1 or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), a test designed to cover both speaking and listening

IELTS is managed by a consortium comprising of the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment
